otherwise, life at work is going well. getting things done in this country is a bit challenging (i.e. taking 10 days to order lumber supplies, always so much fun...) but I'm learning!

mostly, we've all been talking about the crazy weather on the eastcoast! i hope you all are staying safe and dry and not getting into any trouble!

there is a big end of Ramadan celebration here called Eid that starts on tuesday and goes weds and thurs so most businesses and offices are all closed. we'll still be working but it'll be even dead-er.

i've been trying to swim a lot more - have been doing it for about 6 days! swim between 30-45 minutes, somewhere between 70-82 laps (82 laps in our pool is a mile!). it's really fun! i forgot how much i like swimming. i know my parents will have a different opinion on that...

otherwise, all is back to usual production mode! getting things built and finished up ahead of deadlines. we'll see how that works!

stay safe everyone!!

love and miss.
It's weird not being able to have water/coffee at your desk but we have a communal, hidden area that we go into to drink. it's actually kind of nice because that's where you end up seeing everyone and it becomes quite social!

this week was mellow - got to design the production departments office, managed to fit in 150 desks and a conference room, i'm kind of proud of it! next is electric and power and A/C, then walls build and then carpet. never a dull moment! otherwise work is trucking along - a lot of reviewing of drawings and shifting things around (although nothing has been confirmed/approved/booked so it's really more of an exercise than actual production...)

last night went over to my new friend Sil's apartment and watched movies and made dinner - with Ramadan on all the bars are closed so it's a lot of hanging out in apartments and drinking our contraband booze we've managed to score. it's kind of like freshman year in college actually...

it's getting super hot (i know i sound like a broken record at this point but it's true!) and humid, which fogs up your glasses the minute you step outside, which is not fun when it's super bright and you can't see anything!

still hitting the gym while we can - today was spinning and tomorrow it's a special 90 minute Zumba. i may die but it'll be fun!

hope you are all well!!

Today we made it over to the Sheraton Hotel for 11AM spin. It was goood. However, it's hard to get a cab back from the Sheraton at noon so we decided to walk. it realistically is only a 15 minute walk, but after sweating it out for an hour on a spin bike, and then out into the 105 degree heat, it was an adventure!

yesterday we had a movie marathon - started out with Tangled (so cute!) then to the Landmarc mall for a little Cars 2 in 3D action and then late night Point Break viewing. not a bad day. and i managed to get an awesome new duvet cover!! i've been on a mission for new bedding for a while and haven't been able to find what i wanted - and lo and behold, it's in a store in Doha! well, the store is Australian based but it's here! and i have a super fun, semi-indian/middle eastern inspired ridiculously colorful new bedding set! will post a picture as soon as i recharge the camera. but it's awesome. and i'm so excited!

other than that, been a lot of work and figuring out what's going on in the lounges. I was tasked with finding the Ramadan catering so that begins for 30 days starting on monday. Since we cant eat or drink in public, DFI is generously subsidizing our meals so we will eat them in a secluded building and have good catered food for us non-fasters. should be fun!

alright - time for some laundry! hope you are well!!

love!
As addicted as I am to Zumba in the states, I have been wondering what I can do to keep myself latin-dancing out here. At my roommates suggestion, we went to her yoga studio that has salsa class on monday's that she's been trying to go to. It was so much fun! The instructor was Turkish, the other couple in the class was British and we were two Americans, and a Romanian - and we all spoke the language of dance! (that's for you, Halee) It was a lot of fun and now we're headed to the Ramada (because everything does, in fact, happen in hotels here) on Thursday night to try out our newly acquired salsa skills with other people who have danced more than one salsa class before. Excited and a little terrified!

Work is gearing up a tad, have a lot of introductory meetings just learning who everyone is in the department and what they want to do in my tents.

Ok, time for bed, I've got a tent meeting in the AM!kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605321953102821399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7419815490387274835.post-54898777157734189402011-07-17T12:08:00.000-07:002011-07-17T12:10:13.060-07:00Harry Potter - IMAX AND 3D!Made it to Harry Potter yesterday and we decided to splurge - IMAX and 3D! It was a bit intense and we were sitting a hair too close but it was awesome. If you haven't seen it yet, GO! Movies in Qatar are usually censored but apparently the censoring gets worse the longer the film is in the theater - gives more people time to complain about indecent things! As it stands, I don't think anything was cut, but I wouldn't know either. You also have assigned seating in theaters so it's not a total free-for-all for the best seats - you just have to get there early enough to reserve a good seat!

After the movie (which was at a mall...shocker) we went and grabbed some food and then did some shopping at the mall, I got an AMAZING ring at H&M and a long sleeved flowy top.

Work is going fine; it's all the nitty gritty stuff now, like internet connections and power. Super sexy stuff...

We're trying to go to a Spin class at the Interncontental hotel tomorrow after work, I just have to remember to bring my gym clothes!

My roommate, Lea, was headed to the beach today (friday) but I didn't manage to get up in time so decided that this morning/afternoon would be catch up, grocery store, cooking and some gym time.

The Carrefour, the big grocery/electronics/clothing store is a two block walk from my room - two blocks - in the big City Center mall. Everything is in malls here. Now, it's a little hot here, but today the humidly wasn't as bad as it had been so I figured no worries walking TWO BLOCKS to the mall and back. Made it there and went on a leisurely stroll thru the grocery store and picked up a bunch of things for some couscous and lunches for the next week or so. Now, in New York when I hit up the grocery store, I always take the basket that I have to hold so I know how heavy it's going to be lugging it back to the apartment. Today I decided that I'd get a little roll-y cart - bad mistake. I just kept loading it up with heavy stuff, like a jar of olives, and liters of water...

This is what 138 rial of groceries looks like ($38).

And this is what Kerry looks like after lugging the above home TWO BLOCKS:

I don't know if you can see the beads of sweat pouring down my face but I look like I just ran 5 miles. For two blocks. Urgh.

And just for fun, since I'm uploading, here is the pile that I started with packing and the after of what I actually packed (quite successfully I may say!)

There is talk of seeing Harry Potter this weekend so I should probably go and find out what's going on with that...

the humidity has died down a bit which is nice but good lord, it's hot here! however, the office is freezing so half the time i have to go outside and warm up!

the workweek here is sunday - thursday so i get to have my first official weekend starting tonight! i think i may go tomorrow during the day to the beach and to go see the new harry potter. we'll se how much is censored/cut out... the beaches here are all private and you have to pay to go on them, but most of them are owned by the big hotels (intercontinental, hyatt, etc) so you also get to use the pool and swim up bars. should be an adventure!

work is going well, basically been a week of gathering lots of questions and trying to figure out what people are doing and who i need to know! typical first week of work stuff.

been to the gym the last two days - it's crazy there are so many people staying here but the gym is totally empty! i went a little overboard with the sqats a few days ago and my butt is still hurting!

alright - off to catch the shuttle. hopefully there will be photos up of the beach adventure this weekend!

love you all.kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605321953102821399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7419815490387274835.post-26160071553987912482011-07-11T08:37:00.000-07:002011-07-11T08:37:38.140-07:00Back in Doha! The 2011 editionHello 4 blog followers!!! I have safely made it back to Doha, after a super calm flight; I even managed to get a row all to myself! Was picked up after a super easy customs by my fancy driver and shuttled off to the Kempinski in a gold BMW. THIS is the way to travel! Got to my new home-away-from-home, room 1905 and met my new roommate, Lea. She's a full timer at DFI in the ticketing department. Her parents are visiting her and were here welcoming me as well! Very friendly. I managed to stay up until about 10pm and then crashed - but of course, woke up at 4:30am and couldn't go back to sleep until 6:30am. Thank goodness Michael, my boss, told me to take the morning and adjust because I needed it!

I also had the great pleasure of realizing, while going thru customs in NYC, that I totally left my computer charger on my couch! My first purchase in Doha turned out to be a ridiculously expensive new charger...

Today was my first full day at the office; hit a bit of jet lag around 3pm, which worked out perfectly as I then went on a 2 hour tour of all their new ideas for this year - and found out where they are going to put my tents this year! I'm super excited for my lounges this year!

It's a pretty skeletal crew here this early, I'm the 3rd production person with a bunch more to come in the following months. It's kind of nice to be here this early to see all the set ups (and also allows me to voice all my concerns before they have promised the drawings to management!).

OK, time to meet up with a friend for dinner - I've made massive promises to update this thing and I'm going to try my darn-dest to do so! I may even include some pictures as soon as my camera charges! Plus, I know you are all dying to know how being a Westerner in Qatar during Ramadan is...I know I am...

love you all!kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605321953102821399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7419815490387274835.post-90521507019863567582010-10-16T01:00:00.000-07:002010-10-16T01:00:05.092-07:00weekend - thus far!Hi!

This weekend started off with a fright - a grown up sleepover in one of the hotel suites watching two scary movies - Evil Dead and The Shining! I had never seen either, and will probably have to watch the Shining again as I was so exhausted I fell asleep on the couch. From what I remember seeing, I think it was good!

Friday ('saturday' out here) was filled with visiting my tent - yes it's up! - and making sure everything gets into the tent smoothly and I will have power and A/C, then it was off to the Ritz Carlton for their outdoor cinema showing "love, actually". It was awesome! The weather is finally cooling down to a respectable nighttime temperature in the mid-80's and the Ritz went all out. They had set out persian rugs with pillows right in front of their (homemade) screen, pulled in lounge chairs from the pool area and also had table set up in the back. And they had carpet-side service where we could order food and drink! It was quite an experience, and one that the Ritz didn't think would be as popular as it was.

It was windy yesterday (we even saw clouds!) so as the film ended and we were all heading out to the cars, a big gust came and broke the screen! It was created with a few 2x4's and a big screen and the gust came in and snapped the 2x4's holding up the screen. Thankfully this was not a Tribeca production!

Today is 'sunday' and we have just finished our volunteer orientation with some very excited locals who are ready to celeb spot. Soon it's back to the office and then...DUNE BASHING! I will definitely be taking pictures for that one and, once I remember where I put my computer cord, will upload!

Yay!kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605321953102821399noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7419815490387274835.post-7658794789664786932010-10-08T06:50:00.000-07:002010-10-08T06:50:10.043-07:00Photos! A huge outdoor bazaar, the souq has all those random things one needs in the middle east, like abayas and sparkly fabric! There was much more and we got some seriously good lemon roasted almonds, curried cashews, dried banana chips and dried apricots. We wandered around a bit and got a lay of the land and then headed back home. Tomorrow is Thursday, our Friday (Friday and Saturday's are when the office is closed) and I think this weekend we are going to go to brunch and then who knows! Maybe the art museum and the pool... it's a tough life but someone has to live it.kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605321953102821399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7419815490387274835.post-2562199096311002332010-10-04T10:56:00.000-07:002010-10-04T10:56:12.511-07:00Oh yeah, I work here!I have successfully survived two days of work! Doha Film Institute (DFI) the over-arching company that runs the festival, along with a lot of other film initiatives in Doha, is located in the beautiful Katara Cultural Village. Much like some construction in the states, it seems to be running a bit behind schedule. My department, Hospitality, is located in the port-o-cabins, a very nice way of saying temporary office trailers. While most of the departments are in their rightful home, or at least on the property of Katara, I should feel somewhat lucky as there are still departments working out of converted hotel rooms at the W!

My job, Hospitality Tent Coordinator, is to oversee all the activities that goes on in the tent during the festival - set up/clean up/break down, etc. The tent looks like it is going to be awesome...when it is finally constructed...i the next two weeks. All the pieces have arrived from Dubai (nothing seems to actually be in Doha, all production materials are ordered from Dubai or Bahrain or other equally exotic locations, and then shipped/trucked in) and the tent guys are flying in from London this weekend to start on the construction the 12th. Until then, I have stared at the drawings 1,000 times and read a lot on the internet.kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605321953102821399noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7419815490387274835.post-72836954886170621342010-10-04T10:46:00.000-07:002010-10-04T10:46:47.580-07:00Culinary DohaMy food since arriving has been severely lacking in local flavor. My first work lunch we ordered in from a place called American Grille and I had a chicken quesadilla. For lunch today? Subway. Thats right, Jared and Co. have moved into the Middle East.
I have got to get at least a schwarma in this week or it's a complete culinary fail!kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605321953102821399noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7419815490387274835.post-63447117667337335572010-10-02T20:13:00.000-07:002010-10-02T20:13:13.054-07:00good morning sunrise!Well, so much for sleeping in! Woke up bright and early at 4:30AM this morning and forced myself to stay in bed until 5:30AM. Thought I could go down to the gym and maybe do something productive with all this 'found time' but it doesn't open until 11AM! New York Sports Club it is not.

So instead, I made some coffee, had a yoghurt and am reading the online papers.

I wonder how long this jet lag will last...kerryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08605321953102821399noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-7419815490387274835.post-49946914140058653622010-10-02T12:34:00.000-07:002010-10-02T12:34:11.272-07:00Arrived!I was definitely the only blonde in line for check-in this evening for Qatar Airways, so begins this crazy adventure!

The flight was good, a minor 'technical' issue that delayed us for about an hour at JFK but all clearly worked out since I'm here. And alive. I met a nice girl in the security line who was on her way to Egypt for the World Lifeguarding Championships, her only carry on was a backpack and her fins.

I have a nice new stamp/visa in my passport and as soon as I picked up my luggage was greeted by a very nice driver, Benjamin, and whisked away in a really swanky BMW - I could get used to this! The Kempinski is gorgeous - my roommate, Lily, and I are staying in what is called a suite but really it's a family compound - three bedrooms plus a maids room (a maid's room!), gigantic living room/dining room, kitchen and a guest bath with three, yes three, separate sinks. My room has a nice, soft double bed with a huge TV and armoire and my bathroom has a rain shower-head - don't worry, pictures are coming.

Lily and I made it to the mall with the gigantic Carrefour, think French Wal-Mart. Got some food to carry me over until I figure out what's going on here (I wish I took French because what's not written in Arabic is in French!) and tonights' dinner was walnut toast with "four red berry" jelly. Hopefully tomorrow will bring better culinary treats, airplane food and toast isn't that exciting.

So far the only problem is that I can't seem to take out money at the ATM and my Credit Card was denied at the super market (yes, Mom and Dad, I called both before I left to let them know I'm here!)

The weather is HOT, even at 10pm, and humid - was kinda surprised by that but A/C is on high everywhere I've been. My glasses even fogged up when I left the mall.

Tomorrow begins the work week - it's a Sunday-Thursday schedule over here - so I'll be getting back into work mode, blackberry and all.

yay!!
